What is international humanitarian surgery?

International Humanitarian Surgery (IHS) focuses on providing adequate and appropriate surgical
care in resource limited environments located primarily in developing countries. IHS requires familiarity
with general, trauma, pediatric, orthopaedic, thoracic, neuro, urolologic, plastic, obstetric and
gynecologic surgical procedures as well as knowledge of tropical diseases and the management of
complex war wounds.
